Always wanted to explore the beautiful sites and scenes of Scotland, but find yourself living just a tad too far away? Well, now you can. VisitScotland’s new virtual reality app lets you visit some of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks, as if you’re really there. Co-created by Whitespace, Napier University, XDesign and the Scottish Government, the 360 footage is best explored with Google Cardboard for the most immersive experience.

With 26 destinations to see, ranging from Edinburgh Castle to The Kelpies, the app is designed for those contemplating a trip, to get inspired and ultimately make the decision to visit Scotland. Recent studies show that 60% of searches for destination information come from mobile devices. Additionally, virtual reality as a new platform is experiencing exponential growth around the world (forecasted numbers of VR users between now and 2018 set to grow by 400% to 170 million). This creates an opportunity for Scotland to be discovered in a new and engaging way. Furthermore, travel and adventure VR content is the most sought after by consumers (74%), according to Greenlight VR.

ScotlandVR has been a fantastic project for us to bring to life with the teams from VisitScotland, Napier University and XDesign. Combining inspiring 360s of fantastic sites across Scotland, beautifully creative 3D models and the latest in immersive mobile technology. We’re really excited to be able to share Scotland in a new stand out way with people all over the world.
