The most stubborn smokers, undeterred by the smoking ban and years of health education messages, are NHS Health Scotland’s toughest smoking cessation target. Whitespace was tasked with presenting rational cessation messages via a rich-media online advertising campaign that asked smokers to enter their smoking career details into an online calculator (length of career, daily consumption and average price they pay for a pack of 20). The resulting cost of smoking was a real eye opener (often running into tens of thousands of pounds) and this was proven by the interaction rate of 48% with these ads.
