Our Christmas TweetTrain in 2012 was a runaway success for the power of digital, with hundreds of Whitespace clients and friends driving our magic train set through tweets.

Full steam ahead to Christmas

Christmas is a time to enjoy the simpler things in life. And what could be simpler than a good 'ol fashioned train set... powered by tweets?

Installed high up in the Whitespace studio rafters, the train set was hooked up to Twitter. Using the hashtag #TweetTrain caused it to spring into life - you could instruct it to drive fast, or slow, or even backwards! We even had a live camera on board to broadcast the resulting journey.

Our fairy dust

If you're wondering which particular Christmas magic we used; it was the extra special Arduino-micro-controller-coupled-with-a-wifi-receiver type.

You see, Santa's elves replaced the TweetTrain's manual train controller with a wifi receiver so the train could be controlled by digital commands. Tweets containing the hashtag #TweetTrain were searched for, simplified, and sent to a new URL that the Arduino checked for new tweets. Each time it spotted one, it powered the train motors. Magic basically.

We were more than chuffed to receive coverage from publications such as NetMag, DesignSpotter, PromoMarketing, a front page feature in New Media Now, as well as Arduino's own blog.

And with thousands of unique visitors and hundreds of Tweets, it was no surprise that feeds on Ustream clocked over 500 viewer hours.

And it became a runaway success when it was awarded the Chairmans' Award for Design at the Scottish Design Awards 2013.
